Synopsis

Gintama is set in an Edo city where the samurai age has been upended by the arrival of the Amanto, powerful aliens who forced feudal Japan to surrender and reduced the shogunate to a puppet government. With swords banned in public, Gintoki Sakata still walks the streets carrying a wooden sword, clinging to the pride and stubborn habits of a samurai in a world that has largely left that code behind. As the founder of Yorozuya, a small odd-jobs business, he takes on anything that pays, from routine errands to rescue work, and even the simplest request tends to spiral into absurd trouble. By his side are Shinpachi Shimura, a glasses-wearing boy trying to understand what samurai ideals mean in practice; Kagura, a tomboyish girl with superhuman strength and an endless appetite; and Sadaharu, their giant pet dog who loves biting people on the head. Together, they collide with alien royalty, local gangs, corrupt officials, and the strange residents of Edo, creating a story that constantly shifts between action, chaos, and comedy while slowly building the loyalty, regrets, and bonds that hold the trio together across the wider Gintama story.
