Her real name is Horie Yoshiko (堀江 由子), and she is sometimes affectionately nicknamed "Hocchan" by her Japanese fans.
She hosts the radio show Horie Yui no Tenshi no Tamago and is the founding member of the singing group Aice⁵. She’s also a member of the band Kurobara Hozonkai under the name Yuiel. Her hobbies include giving shoulder massages, reading, and cooking.
As a child she was a huge fan of the anime Dirty Pair and later said the series was her first inspiration to become a voice actress.
She debuted in 1997 in the video game Voice Fantasia and spent several years in minor anime roles before landing her first lead as Haruka in Kurogane Communication. The turning point in her career came in 2000 when she won the role of Narusegawa Naru in the hit anime Love Hina. Other defining moments were voicing Honda Tohru in Fruits Basket in 2001 and releasing her first music album (Mizutamari ni Utsuru Sekai) in 2000. She has since become one of Japan’s most popular seiyuu.
In 2001 Horie formed a temporary unit called Yamato Nadeshiko with fellow seiyuu Tamura Yukari. They released two singles, Mou Hitori no Watashi and Merry Merrily—the latter was used as an insert song in the Love Hina Christmas Special: Silent Eve.
In October 2005 she founded Aice⁵, a J-pop group with four other seiyuu intended to help launch their careers. Aice⁵ officially disbanded on September 20, 2007.
She has also collaborated with artists like Unscandal in 2005 and with Kurobara Hozonkai, a Japanese goth band, in 2007.
She was affiliated with Arts Vision until mid-2007, when she left amid a scandal involving the agency’s top management and became a freelance seiyuu unassociated with any talent firm.
She has released six independent music albums; nearly all include at least one track tied to an anime she worked on. She currently releases music under the Starchild label (a subdivision of King Records).
