fripSide is a Japanese indie pop band formed in 2002 and best known for its strong connection to anime theme songs. The project was originally led by nao on vocals and lyrics, alongside sat, also known as Satoshi Yaginuma, who handled lyrics, synthesizers, composition, and arrangement. Over time, the group also worked with a number of support musicians, giving the project a flexible and evolving sound.
In 2009, nao graduated from fripSide, and the project entered a new phase under sat's direction. Yoshino Nanjo joined as vocalist and made her debut on the hit single "only my railgun," the opening theme for To Aru Kagaku no Railgun. That release became a defining track for the group and helped establish fripSide as one of the more recognizable names in modern anime music.
With Nanjo on vocals, fripSide continued to build a reputation for polished electronic pop, energetic melodies, and dramatic arrangements suited to anime openings. The group's work during this period further strengthened its place in the anison scene, especially through songs tied to popular series in the A Certain Scientific Railgun franchise.
In 2021, Nanjo announced her graduation from the project, and fripSide later introduced Mao Uesugi and Hisayo Abe as the new vocalists. The lineup changes marked another major transition in the band's history, while sat continued to guide the project and its signature sound.
