Natsume Yuujinchou

Natsume Yuujinchou follows Takashi Natsume, a boy who has always been able to see strange creatures called youkai. Shuffled from one foster home to another, he grows up lonely and guarded, convinced that no one around him would ever believe what he sees. Even with his current caretakers and classmates, he keeps his distance, hiding both his ability and the pain it has caused him. That changes when Natsume accidentally breaks an invisible barrier and frees Madara, a powerful spirit trapped in the body of a lucky cat. Madara quickly realizes that Natsume resembles his late grandmother, Reiko Natsume, an outcast girl who became infamous in the youkai world for creating the Book of Friends. The book, now in Natsume's hands, contains the names of the youkai Reiko defeated, giving its owner the power to summon them. Although Natsume has no interest in using that power for himself, he chooses to keep the book to honor Reiko's memory and protect it from scheming youkai. He strikes a deal with Madara: when his time comes, Natsume will hand over the book, and until then Madara will act as his unofficial bodyguard under the name Nyanko-sensei. As Natsume begins to free the names sealed by Reiko, his reluctant bond with both youkai and humans slowly becomes a path toward trust, empathy, and healing.
