3-gatsu no Lion follows Rei Kiriyama, a young professional shogi player whose talent has carried him into the upper ranks of the game but has done little to ease the loneliness that shadows his daily life. Between the pressure of competition, the weight of his career, and the isolation that has marked him for years, Rei drifts through his world with few connections and little sense of where he belongs.
That begins to change through the people around him. At the shogi hall, at school, and in the neighborhood where he lives, Rei encounters vivid personalities who slowly draw him outside his shell. Most important are the three Kawamoto sisters—Akari, Hinata, and Momo—whose warmth and steady presence give him a home-like place to return to, even as their own hidden burdens remind him that kindness often carries private pain. As Rei learns to rely on others and to support them in return, he starts to understand the fragile but powerful bonds that can make hardship bearable.
Shogi, however, remains unforgiving. Tournaments, championships, and title matches continue to test Rei against formidable opponents, and every step forward in the professional world brings fresh pressure. Balancing those relationships with the demands of his career, Rei keeps searching for the reason he plays the game that defines his life.
