About the song
YOASOBI’s “Kaibutsu (怪物),” or “Monster,” is the opening theme for the second season of Beastars. In keeping with the duo’s novel-into-music approach, the song was developed from a story by Beastars creator Paru Itagaki. Its perspective reflects Legoshi’s central conflict: he wants to protect the people he cares about without pretending that his predatory nature does not exist. Ayase’s production combines a relentless electronic pulse, prominent bass, and sudden shifts in intensity, while ikura moves from restraint to open urgency. The result mirrors a society divided between herbivores and carnivores without reducing that division to a simple struggle between good and evil. When the chorus arrives, the protagonist’s fear of being a “monster” becomes a statement of resolve—the identity imposed on him does not remove his ability to choose how he treats others.
