supercell

supercell is a Japanese music project and band formed in 2007 and led by songwriter and producer ryo. Built around a collaborative creative team and a rotating lineup of vocalists, it first gained attention through Vocaloid songs distributed online. That early phase began with works using 初音ミク and the independent single “Melt” released at Comiket 73 in 2007. After the independent album supercell in 2008, the project moved into major-label activity with Sony Music Entertainment Japan. Its music blends J-pop, j-rock, pop rock, rock, electronic elements, and cinematic arrangements, and its artwork and animation-driven presentation were shaped by collaborators including Shirow Miwa, Huke, and redjuice. supercell later expanded into a broader pop act with human vocalists. yanaginagi, credited in the group’s early years as Nagi, sang from the first single through the album Today Is A Beautiful Day. That period included the ending themes “Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari (君の知らない物語)” for “Bakemonogatari” and “Utakata Hanabi (うたかた花火)” for “Naruto”. After a 2011 audition, Koeda followed and sang on “My Dearest” and “Kokuhaku (告白)” for “Guilty Crown”, “The Bravery” for “Magi”, and “Hakushi Kassai Uta Awase (拍手喝采歌合)” for “Katanagatari”, before supercell released the album ZIGAEXPERIENTIA. Ann and gaku joined the lineup from 2019 onward, continuing the project’s movement from its digital music roots into mainstream pop production.
