Guilty Crown unfolds in a Japan still scarred by the Lost Christmas outbreak of December 24, 2029, when the Apocalypse Virus spread across the country and plunged it into chaos. In response, the United Nations sends GHQ to contain the crisis, but the organization also strips Japan of its political autonomy and keeps the nation under strict control a decade later.
Against that occupation, the resistance group Funeral Parlor works to free Japan from GHQ's rule. Led by the charismatic Gai Tsutsugami, the group moves to steal a vial containing the Void Genome, an object that becomes tied to the fate of internet vocalist Inori Yuzuriha. Hunted by GHQ's Anti-Bodies forces, Inori takes refuge in a warehouse, where she meets Shuu Ouma, a socially awkward high school student and devoted fan of her music.
When Shuu rescues her, the Void Genome shatters in his hand and grants him the Power of the Kings. Thrown into the center of the conflict, Shuu must learn to control his new ability while fighting alongside Funeral Parlor in the struggle to liberate Japan from its oppressive rulers.
