Saeko Chiba is a Japanese seiyuu and singer from Hachinohe, Aomori, Japan, known for building a career that bridges voice acting, stage performance, and anime- and game-related music. She is listed as blood type A, stands 160 cm tall, and weighs 45 kg. On 2007-08-26, she married on her 30th birthday.
Before entering voice acting full-time, Chiba studied ballet and dreamed of joining the Takarazuka Revue. After failing the Takarazuka Music School entrance exam in her third year of middle school, she joined the Minami Aoyama Shōjo Kageki Dan (南青山少女歌劇団, also called Nanshō), a stage group for teenage girls. Over the three years she spent with the troupe, she earned several lead roles, gaining the performance experience that would later shape her work as a performer and voice actress.
Her move into seiyuu work began with the lead voice role of Kotori Haruno in the Sega Dreamcast game Diamond Daydreams, after which she chose to pursue voice acting professionally. Among her earlier roles are her seiyuu debut as Tsubaki Sakura in Kare Kano, Kitsune no Akane in Angel Tales, and Elliot Chapman in Sci-fi Harry. She became especially associated with tsundere and "cool-girl" characters because of her long, straight, black hair and calm, seemingly cold image, and she later noted in a My-HiME fandisc interview that cutting her hair short in spring 2005 coincided with a broader variety of roles.
Alongside voice acting, Saeko Chiba developed a singing career closely connected to anime and game music. Yuki Kajiura, who had written music for some of the Nanshō stage shows, wrote and produced almost all of her material. Her first single was "Koi no Kiseki," the theme song for the PlayStation game Meguri Aishite. She later released nine singles and two albums, in addition to various character song and drama CDs, and also performed theme songs for games such as Alundra 2 and Atelier Judie.
Chiba was also part of tiaraway with fellow Nanshō member Yuuka Nanri. The pair originally recorded and performed as "Saeko Chiba & Yuuka Nanri" for Memories Off 2nd, then released three singles and an album before the duo broke up on March 6, 2005. Her career remains notable for connecting stage training, seiyuu work, and anison performances in a way that made her a recognizable figure in Japanese pop culture.
