Uchouten Kazoku unfolds in Kyoto, where tanuki and tengu have lived for years among humans who remain oblivious to their existence. Yasaburou Shimogamo, the carefree third son of an influential tanuki family, spends his days looking after an old tengu, slipping through the city in shapeshifted form, and crossing paths with the mysterious woman Benten. Beneath Kyoto’s calm surface lies an old wound: Yasaburou’s father, the head of the tanuki community, was killed and eaten by a group of humans known as the Friday Fellows.
From there, the series follows the Shimogamo brothers as they try to keep their family intact and avoid the same grisly fate while inching closer to the truth behind their father’s death. Their lives are shaped by rivalries, loyalties, and long-buried resentments that surface inside a hidden world of supernatural politics, family bonds, and uneasy coexistence. Everyday Kyoto becomes a stage where shapeshifted tanuki, proud tengu, and unwitting humans collide, and where a careless choice can deepen old wounds or briefly heal them. The story keeps its whimsical edge, but the danger behind that whimsy never disappears, making every encounter feel playful, tense, and deeply personal.
