In Tokyo Ravens, onmyoudou—once used by Japan during the Second World War to gain the upper hand—has been modernized into a discipline that supports medicine and technology, even though Tokyo still lives in the aftermath of the Great Spiritual Disaster. That catastrophe, caused by the revered onmyouji Yakou Tsuchimikado, left the capital plagued by spiritual turmoil and led to the creation of the Onmyou Agency, whose exorcists contain disasters and battle the demons that slip into the human world.
Harutora Tsuchimikado comes from the branch family of the Tsuchimikado clan, but unlike the gifted heirs around him, he has no talent for magic and tries to live an ordinary life. Years earlier, he promised to stand beside Natsume, the heir of the main family and Yakou's supposed reincarnation, and to serve as her familiar. When a prominent member of the Onmyou Agency attempts to recreate the experiment that helped bring about Japan's downfall, Harutora finally chooses to honor that promise. What begins as a return to an old bond pulls Harutora and Natsume into a struggle that reaches beyond school life and into the center of Tokyo's spiritual crisis.
