Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru follows college student Akane Kinoshita after her boyfriend leaves her for another girl, leaving her to sort through heartbreak and the memories tied to Forest of Savior, the MMO they used to play together. Looking for a way to reclaim some pride, Akane decides to use the game's upcoming in-person event to get back at her ex. That plan brings her face to face with Akito Yamada, a gaming legend and her guildmate, whose blunt, quiet presence is as unsettling as it is strangely reassuring. As Akane leans on Yamada for support and ropes him into helping with her scheme, the two begin spending time together both inside Forest of Savior and in the real world. Their personalities could hardly be more different: Akane is emotional, open, and still nursing a broken heart, while Yamada is asocial, reserved, and difficult to read. Yet the more they talk, the more they notice the strengths, quirks, and kindnesses hidden beneath each other's first impressions.
