Lycoris Recoil follows a Japan where public life is kept deceptively safe by Direct Attack (DA), a secret organization that keeps crime low by sending orphaned girls known as Lycoris into the shadows as undercover agents and assassins. At the center of the series are Takina Inoue and Chisato Nishikigi, two Lycoris whose sharply different ideas about duty quickly push them beyond DA’s strict chain of command.
After Takina disobeys orders during a hostage incident, DA removes her from active duty and sends her to LycoReco, a café that doubles as an unofficial operational base. There she is paired with Chisato, a celebrated Lycoris who prefers nonlethal solutions and spends much of her time helping clients with odd jobs. Their partnership forces Takina to question the rules she has followed without hesitation, while Chisato’s easygoing front hides a deeper resolve that shapes everything around her.
As the two take on requests from the café and get drawn into larger conflicts, Lycoris Recoil balances quiet character work with rising tension. The contrast between DA’s brutal discipline and Chisato’s refusal to kill gives the story its core conflict, as Takina and Chisato are pushed to confront violence, loyalty, and the future they want to build while the calm surface of their world begins to crack.
