Houseki no Kuni

Houseki no Kuni is set in a distant future after six meteors shattered the world, leaving behind a strange society inhabited by crystalline beings known as Gems. These Gems live under constant threat from the Lunarians, who descend from the sky to break their bodies apart and take the fragments away as ornaments, forcing every Gem to take a place in the community's defense and daily survival. Among them is Phosphophyllite, or Phos, a young Gem whose fragile body keeps them from joining the front lines. Instead, Phos is assigned to compile an encyclopedia, a task that only deepens their frustration and sense of inadequacy. In searching for something more meaningful, Phos encounters Cinnabar, an intelligent Gem condemned to patrol a remote island at night because the corrosive poison produced by their body makes them impossible to place elsewhere. Moved by Cinnabar's isolation, Phos resolves to find a role that can help both of them, and perhaps the other rejected Gems as well. The story follows Phos as they struggle to become useful, protect their fellow Gems, and discover where they belong in a world where every shattered fragment carries weight.
