To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts unfolds in the middle of the Patrian civil war, when the outnumbered Northerners create half-beast, half-human soldiers known as Incarnates to withstand the overwhelming Southern forces. Their godlike power turns the tide of battle, but the same beasts that make them effective on the front lines begin to erode the soldiers from within, leaving the war’s most celebrated weapons unable to find relief through ordinary means.
When peace arrives, the Incarnates’ wartime legacy becomes a dangerous social problem. Special Sergeant Major Hank Henriette, once the captain of that unit, now works as a Beast Hunter, tracking down Incarnates who have succumbed to the horrors tied to their battlefield transformation. His grim duty places him at the center of a society still haunted by the war and by the men and women it used as instruments of victory.
The story also follows Nancy Schaal Bancroft, who watches her father, a former Incarnate soldier, die at the hands of one of these hunters. At first determined to avenge him, she is instead drawn into the deeper mystery behind her father’s death and the Incarnates’ troubled place in the world, where heroism, guilt, and the cost of survival are inseparable.
