Jigokuraku

Hell's Paradise (Jigokuraku) centers on Gabimaru the Hollow, a ninja who has lived through so much violence that death no longer seems to frighten him. After a blood-soaked career, he is sentenced to die, but every execution attempt fails in ways that seem almost impossible. When Sagiri Yamada Asaemon, a young member of a renowned executioner clan, is assigned to carry out the sentence, she sees through his empty composure and refuses to simply follow the order. Instead, Sagiri offers Gabimaru a chance at a full pardon. If he can travel to the island of Shinsekyo, recover the Elixir of Life said to grant immortality, and return it to the shogun, his freedom will be secured. The mission is as dangerous as it sounds: many have already gone to Shinsekyo in search of the mythical elixir, and none have returned sound of mind, if at all. With the hope of surviving the island and earning the peaceful life he and his wife have always wanted, Gabimaru accepts the task and joins ten other death row convicts on an expedition that may decide his fate.
