Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Higurashi: When They Cry is set in the quiet village of Hinamizawa, where Keiichi Maebara quickly falls in with a circle of classmates and friends: Rena Ryuuguu, Mion Sonozaki, Satoko Houjou, and Rika Furude. What begins as an ordinary rural life slowly becomes unsettling as the annual festival approaches, and Keiichi learns that the village's cheerful surface hides chilling local legends, unexplained murders, and disappearances linked to the festival and the god Oyashiro. As he asks questions, the others grow evasive, and the bonds he thought were solid begin to feel fragile. Suspicion spreads through the community, and Keiichi's attempts to separate rumor from truth pull him deeper into fear, paranoia, and madness. Across multiple arcs, Higurashi builds a psychological horror mystery around trust, loyalty, and the possibility that the people closest to Keiichi may not be telling him everything. The story keeps returning to the same village and cast, but each arc reveals another angle of Hinamizawa's darkness, blending tension, dread, and sudden violence into a franchise-wide puzzle.
