Ao Haru Ride centers on Futaba Yoshioka, a high school student who goes out of her way to seem loud, awkward, and unfeminine. In middle school, she was ostracized by other girls after becoming a little too popular with boys, and she now works hard to avoid repeating that experience by repelling attention before it can turn into trouble.
What she cannot put behind her are the memories of Kou Tanaka, the boy she once liked and the quiet moments they shared before he suddenly stopped attending school and never came back. When Futaba learns that Kou has returned—this time under the name Kou Mabuchi—she feels the old excitement return immediately. The boy in front of her is taller, more charismatic, and far more withdrawn than the warm Kou she remembers, which makes him feel almost unreachable. Futaba starts to believe that if she can return to her former self, Kou will notice her again, but doing so may mean sacrificing the bubble of normalcy and the friendships she has built for herself. As their reunion forces both of them to confront who they used to be and who they have become, Ao Haru Ride turns that first crush into a delicate test of honesty, trust, and the cost of changing for someone else.
