Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra

Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra is a Japanese ska and jazz big band from Tokyo, formed in 1985. Built around a brass-driven ensemble sound, the group became one of Japan’s best-known acts in the genre by blending the offbeat pulse of ska with jazz, rock, punk, reggae, and Latin influences. The core lineup has included Atsushi Yanaka, Tsuyoshi Kawakami, Kin'ichi Motegi, Tatsuyuki Aoki, and Tatsuyuki Hiyamuta, and the band has released music through Avex Trax. Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra is especially known for energetic arrangements and a live style that emphasizes musicianship, tight horn lines, and rhythmic momentum, giving it appeal to listeners who follow ska, jazz fusion, rock, and instrumental pop. Over the years, the band has released a long run of albums and singles and built a strong reputation in Japan and abroad. Its catalog moves between polished studio recordings and the more spontaneous energy of concert performances, which has helped define its identity. In April 2026, trombonist Masahiko Kitahara ended his activities with the group to focus on his own music, marking a notable change in the lineup. Beyond the core ska scene, the band’s music has also appeared in soundtrack and media contexts, widening its visibility and reinforcing Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra’s status as a landmark name in Japanese ska.
