Biography

THE YELLOW MONKEY is a Japanese rock band formed in 1988 and made up of Kazuya Yoshii, Hideaki Kikuchi, Yoichi Hirose, and Eiji Kikuchi. Often written in full capitals, the group is known for a sound that blends rock, glam, and glam rock with dramatic melodies, powerful vocals, and theatrical live energy. Signed to Nippon Columbia, they built a strong identity early and became one of the most recognizable names in Japan’s rock scene. During the 1990s, THE YELLOW MONKEY rose to major popularity and established themselves as a central act in Japanese rock, thanks to catchy hooks, emotional delivery, and polished production. Their catalogue includes songs and albums that helped define their reputation for big choruses and memorable arrangements while keeping the same core identity over time. After disbanding in 2004, they eventually returned to activity, extending a career that has remained influential in Japanese music. In 2025, they also drew renewed attention through the opening song music video for Nyaight of the Living Cat, underscoring their continued relevance to anime and anison audiences.
