österreich

österreich is the solo project of Kunimitsu Takahashi, best known as the former guitarist of the cabs. Built after the breakup of the cabs, the project gave Takahashi a new outlet for his songwriting and guitar work outside the band. The context behind its formation is closely tied to the end of the cabs. The group disbanded in February 2013 before they could carry out a planned record release tour, leaving that chapter unfinished and adding to the uncertainty around their final days. According to the information available about that period, Takahashi briefly disappeared before the split, which only deepened the sense of instability surrounding the band's breakup. Takahashi later explained that the breakup was connected to his own laziness and the mental difficulties he was dealing with at the time. That candid reflection helps frame österreich as more than a side project: it is part of his response to a difficult transition and a continuation of his creative identity after the cabs. For listeners interested in Japanese indie and alternative music, österreich remains a notable name because it links Takahashi's earlier work with a new solo path. The project is especially relevant for fans following the post-cabs trajectory of one of the scene's most recognizable guitarists.
