Maximum the Hormone

Maximum the Hormone is a Japanese band from Hachiōji, Tokyo, formed in 1998. The lineup consists of Ryō Kawakita, Daisuke Tsuda, Nao Kawakita, and Futoshi Uehara; Nao is Ryō Kawakita’s older sister. The group first worked through the independent label SkyRecord, then released material on the Mimikajiru imprint, and later signed with Vap. Its music blends nu metal, j-rock, and punk with heavier pop-punk and thrash-metal elements. That sound is often built around the contrasting vocals of Daisuke Tsuda and Ryō Kawakita, Futoshi Uehara’s rhythmic slap bass, and Nao Kawakita’s drumming. Their songs and lyrics are often deliberately surreal. After early releases such as A.S.A. Crew, the band went on to issue albums including ぶっ生き返す and 予襲復讐. 予襲復讐 topped the album chart for three consecutive weeks and won the grand prize at the 6th CD Shop Awards in 2014. The band has also contributed extensively to anime. It performed "What's up, people?!" and "Zetsubō Billy" for Death Note, "Hawatari 2-oku Centi (刃渡り2億センチ)" for Chainsaw Man, and "Kamigami (KAMIGAMI-神噛-)" for Shuumatsu no Walküre. In June 2026, the band was also announced as the act behind the opening theme for a Chainsaw Man smartphone game project.
