Biography

luz is a Japanese utaite and J-pop singer whose real name is 帯刀光司. Born on July 23, 1993, he was 1/8th Japanese and also had Filipino and German-American heritage; he had blood type B and stood 183 cm tall (6 ft). His voice was known for a high register that could sound soft or restrained while still feeling emotive, and his repertoire often leaned toward emotional or slow songs, though he also took part in playful collaborations. He first appeared on Nico Nico Douga in July 2010 as a namahousou personality and became especially known for his imitations of Gintama characters Sakata Gintoki and Okita Sougo. After occasional singing namahousou sessions encouraged listeners to push him toward utaite activity, he used an interface for the first time and uploaded a cover of "1925" in October 2010. A major turning point in his career came with his cover of "Ifuudoudou", after which he became associated more strongly with the erotic quality of his covers than with the "lazy cuteness" he had been known for before. That shift helped define his image within the utaite scene and made his style more instantly recognizable to listeners. His collaboration with Piko on "Isshinfuran" also showed that he could rap. luz remained a distinctive presence in the utaite community until his death on August 19, 2025, at the age of 32.
