Dark Gathering centers on Keitarou Gentouga, a college freshman whose powerful spiritual presence has attracted spirits to him since childhood. A traumatic encounter left his right hand cursed, so he wears a glove at all times while trying to build a quiet, ordinary life. When his childhood friend Eiko Houzuki encourages him to take a job as a private tutor, his first student turns out to be Yayoi Houzuki, Eiko's cousin and the top student in the tutoring firm's intake class.
Yayoi has two pupils in each eye, a gift that lets her see the spirit world and hunt vengeful ghosts on purpose. After a car accident killed both of her parents, she has devoted herself to finding the powerful spirit that took her mother's departed soul. Because spirits are drawn to Keitarou, she pulls him into her search and asks him to help gather evil spirits that will eventually serve as weapons in her confrontation with that enemy. What begins as an uneasy partnership soon becomes a dangerous journey through hauntings, curses, and obsessive revenge, with each new spirit testing Keitarou's determination to keep going.
