Kenichi Asai

Kenichi Asai is a Japanese rock musician and guitarist, best known as the frontman of BLANKEY JET CITY, SHERBETS, AJICO, and PONTIACS. Born as 浅井健一 on December 29, 1964, in Meitō-ku, Japan, he has built a long career around guitar-driven rock songs, a raw and energetic sound, and a stage presence that made him one of the most recognizable figures in Japanese rock. His work has moved across bands and collaborations without losing the sharp, distinctive personality that defines his music. Associated with rock and active under Ariola Japan, Asai has remained a central name for listeners who follow alternative and guitar-based Japanese music. Across his projects, Asai has kept a consistent identity as both a prolific guitarist and a charismatic band leader. BLANKEY JET CITY, SHERBETS, AJICO, and PONTIACS each show different sides of that approach, from stripped-down intensity to broader collaborative settings, while still keeping attitude, texture, and momentum at the center. In 2026, his name returned to attention through participation on Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra's latest album, alongside renewed BLANKEY JET CITY catalog activity that included a compilation built around unreleased songs and remastered reissues of the band's original albums. For listeners discovering his catalog, Kenichi Asai remains a key figure in Japanese rock whose influence has carried across multiple generations.
