True Tears follows Shinichirou Nakagami, a boy whose quiet life is disrupted by the people already closest to him. He is living under the same roof as Hiromi Yuasa, a prodigal student who looks bright and cheerful at school, yet has grown depressed and cold at home ever since her mother died. His situation makes him the object of ignorant jealousy from his classmates, and the rumors only grow stronger after he meets Noe Isurugi, a girl known for cursing her classmates, with those curses always coming true.
Noe curses Shinichirou as well, but the result is far stranger than either of them expects: two pits are created when you curse someone, and her curse on Shinichirou comes back to bite her in the form of a raccoon threatening her beloved chicken, Raigomaru. Even then, Noe does not shed a single tear. Her tears had already been stolen, and if she wants to cry again, she will need the tears of another. Shinichirou knows exactly whose tears he wants to take away, leaving him caught between Hiromi's locked-away sadness and Noe's unsettling loneliness as he searches for a way to reach them both.
