Suzume follows Suzume Iwato, a high school student whose quiet routine is upended after she meets Souta Munakata, a young man traveling across Japan to search for abandoned places. When she follows him to the ruins of an old building, Suzume discovers a mysterious door that opens onto an otherworldly space, and in the confusion she accidentally frees a strange stone that can take the form of a cat. That mistake draws her into a widening crisis linked to hidden doors scattered across the country.
As more doors begin to open in towns and remote locations, Suzume and Souta race from place to place to seal them before the disaster inside each one escapes into the real world. The film blends supernatural tension with the rhythm of a road movie, using each stop to reflect on distance, memory, and the damage left behind by past catastrophes. Along the way, Suzume slowly becomes a more determined protagonist, while her bond with Souta gives the story its emotional center and deepens the quiet sense of loss that follows them from one place to the next.
