In The Faraway Paladin, Will is born into a new world after a life of stagnancy and opens his eyes to the faces of a skeleton, a ghost, and a mummy. The three undead guardians raise him in the ruins of a city long fallen, and each leaves a lasting mark on the boy they call family: Blood teaches him to fight, Gus teaches him magic, and Mary teaches him religion and responsibility. Most importantly, they teach him love, giving him the emotional foundation he never had before.
As Will grows up, he begins to understand the world he was born into and prepares for the day when he must set out on his own. That departure is tied to a lifelong promise, because at coming-of-age every adult must swear an oath to the god of their choice, and the strength of that pledge determines the degree of the god's blessing. With the time to leave approaching, Will must face the truth of his undead guardians and step into a world whose present state is as uncertain to them as it is to him. Even so, he learns that every oath must eventually be fulfilled, one way or another.
