Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace opens with middle school student Yoshio Kobayashi waking up in his classroom to a nightmare scene: his teacher has been mutilated, and Yoshio is holding the weapon used in the crime. The apparent setup immediately marks him as the prime suspect, but the detached Yoshio is less alarmed than intrigued by the attempt to frame him.
With his reluctant friend Souji Hashiba pulled into the case, Yoshio sets out to prove his innocence and uncover the truth behind the murder. That search brings him face to face with Kogorou Akechi, a brilliant high school detective who arrives to investigate the scene. When Akechi meets the boy accused of the crime, an intense mutual fascination sparks between them: Kobayashi wants to enter Akechi's world of crime solving as his assistant, and Akechi wants to see whether the eager boy can withstand the challenges that come with it.
Set in a surreal world of brutal and bizarre crimes, Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace is a mystery and horror anime loosely based on stories written by Ranpo Edogawa, whose influence on Japanese fiction is widely recognized.
