NieR unfolds in a post-apocalyptic future where alien-crafted Machine Lifeforms have driven humanity from Earth and forced the survivors to retreat to the Moon. From that distant refuge, the remnants of humankind depend on YoRHa, a force of man-made android soldiers, to reclaim the planet. At the center of the frontline is YoRHa 2-gou B-gata, known as 2B, a disciplined combat unit assigned to help turn the tide against an enemy that seems endless.
As the war against the machines drags on, NieR follows the YoRHa units as they begin to confront the unsettling truths hidden beneath the conflict. The longer 2B fights, the harder it becomes to separate duty from doubt, and the more fragile the idea of humanity's grand plan starts to look. What begins as a mission to retake Earth gradually becomes a struggle over identity, purpose, and the price of obedience, with 2B and her allies forced to question how much they must sacrifice for a future that may never be simple, clean, or entirely human.
