Mushishi

In Mushishi, the world is inhabited by “mushi,” the most basic forms of life. They exist without goals or purpose beyond simply being, and they lie outside the familiar categories of good and evil. These strange beings can take countless forms, sometimes resembling plants, diseases, or even natural phenomena such as rainbows. That definition, however, only hints at how elusive they are. Even calling them a form of life is an oversimplification, because detailed knowledge about mushi is rare and most humans are completely unaware that they exist at all. Their presence is often felt only when something inexplicable disturbs the balance of everyday life. At the center of Mushishi is Ginko, a Mushishi who studies mushi in search of answers. He follows rumors of unusual happenings that may be linked to them, traveling from place to place and observing how these hidden beings affect people, animals, and the world around them. Each encounter brings him closer to understanding where mushi fit within the hierarchy of life, and to the deeper question that drives his search: what do they mean, and what does their existence reveal about life itself?
