Kyokou Suiri, released internationally as In/Spectre, unfolds in a world where youkai live hidden in plain sight and old legends can become real threats whenever the boundary between the supernatural and humanity starts to crack. As a child, Kotoko Iwanaga was taken by youkai and agreed to become their "God of Wisdom," a mediator between the two worlds, at the cost of her right eye and left leg. Years later, she steps in when ordinary people cannot handle yokai-related problems, and with her sharp mind and fearless attitude she turns rumor, fear, and folklore into cases that demand careful investigation.
During a visit to a local hospital, Kotoko meets Kurou Sakuragawa, a university student recovering from a long-term relationship that ended in an unfortunate breakup. Sensing something supernatural beneath his calm, harmless exterior, and harboring feelings for him, she asks him to help her deal with youkai-related incidents. From that point on, the two become partners in both mystery and survival, navigating strange encounters that reveal how dangerous a hidden world can be.
Two years later, news spreads that an idol was accidentally crushed to death by steel beams. Soon after, sightings begin to point to a faceless woman wielding a steel beam, pulling Kotoko and Kurou into a case that seems tied to the death itself. What begins as another supernatural rumor quickly turns into something far more sinister and personal than they expected. That case is only one part of a broader franchise built around the pair's uneasy partnership, where supernatural threats are often shaped as much by human fear and belief as by the youkai themselves.
