Deep in the Japanese countryside, Kemono Jihen begins when Kohachi Inugami, an occult detective, is summoned to a remote village by a hostess at a local inn who wants answers about a horrific pattern of deaths and decay. Livestock have been appearing rotting and mutilated with no clear cause, and the quiet investigation quickly turns strange when Inugami notices a boy laboring in the fields. The child, isolated from the other villagers and mocked as Dorotabou because of his stench, reacts with surprise when the detective singles him out.
Rather than treating the boy as a mere witness, Inugami draws him into the case, even as the villagers look on with suspicion. Their search for the truth behind the corpses exposes Kemono Jihen’s concealed reality: a world in which beast-like beings called Kemono live alongside humans. For Dorotabou, the investigation becomes more than a mystery to solve. It is the first real chance to find belonging, uncover a place for himself, and step into a life with purpose after feeling like an outcast for so long.
