Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress

In Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, an industrial revolution has been besieged by the Kabane, horrific creatures born from a mysterious virus that tear through human flesh to feed on the living. Their steel-coated hearts are the only weak point, and anyone bitten is doomed to become one of them, rising again as part of the undead horde. In a world where fear and survival shape every day, only the most fortified civilizations have endured. On the island of Hinomoto, humanity hides behind massive walls and relies on heavily armored steam trains to move people and supplies between isolated strongholds. At Aragane Station, Ikoma is one of the young workers keeping those fortresses running. He builds and services the trains while secretly developing the Tsuranukizutsu, a weapon he believes can pierce a Kabane's heart, and waits for the day he can finally fight back. That opportunity arrives sooner than expected when a runaway Hayajiro crashes through the station defenses, throwing its fragile safety into chaos. In the middle of the attack, Ikoma encounters Mumei, a mysterious girl excused from the mandatory Kabane inspection and far more capable in battle than she first appears. Driven onto the rails with other survivors, Ikoma is pulled into a desperate struggle to protect the remnants of Hinomoto and keep civilization alive while the Kabane close in from every side.
