In ID:INVADED, the Mizuhanome System opens a window into one of the most unsettling places in existence: the human mind. By using so-called "cognition particles" left behind at a crime scene by the perpetrator, detectives from the specialized police squad Kura can enter a virtual representation of a criminal's unconscious, a bizarre stream of thoughts known as an "id well," and search it for clues that will reveal the culprit's identity.
Not everyone can enter an id well. The prerequisite is that you must have killed someone yourself, which makes former detective Akihito Narihisago a rare and troubling asset. Known inside the id wells as "Sakaido," he was once a respected member of the police before tragedy pushed him to the other side of the law.
Even while confined, Narihisago continues assisting Kura with investigations. His prodigious detective skills still make him invaluable, but the deeper he goes into these psychic labyrinths, the more clearly he sees that the cases they are handling are not isolated incidents. Behind the seemingly standalone murders lies a far more sinister truth, and uncovering it may be the only way to understand the world he has been pulled into.
