Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue. centers on Subaru Mikazuki, a 23-year-old reclusive mystery novelist whose quiet routine is defined by grief, solitude, and the habits of living alone after losing his parents. Accustomed to keeping his distance from other people, Subaru has little experience with the warmth, patience, or unpredictability that come with sharing a home.
Everything begins to change when he encounters a stray cat named Haru and decides to adopt her. What starts as a simple act of kindness soon becomes a shared daily life in which Subaru has to learn how to feed her, understand her moods, and care for her in a way that respects her independence. In turn, Haru becomes a quiet but constant presence in his home, and the two gradually build a relationship that is as awkward as it is comforting.
As the days pass, the series follows their small, domestic moments and the slow process of learning to trust one another. Through that connection, Subaru and Haru each begin to ease the loneliness the other has carried, turning an isolated apartment into a place where healing and affection can grow little by little.
