Detroit Metal City is the OVA adaptation of Kiminori Wakasugi’s comedy manga, and it centers on Souichi Negishi, a shy college graduate whose gentle voice and love of Swedish pop make him the last person anyone would expect to find in a brutal death metal band. By day, Negishi tries to live an ordinary life and hold on to the mild, awkward personality he actually wants to show the world. By night, he becomes Johannes Krauser II, the demonic frontman of Detroit Metal City, an underground group known for obscene lyrics, ferocious live shows, and an image so outrageous that fans are convinced their singer is something inhuman.
The comedy comes from the constant collision between those two identities. As Detroit Metal City’s reputation spreads, Negishi is pulled deeper into outrageous concerts, public humiliation, and strained personal relationships, all while desperately protecting the soft-spoken temperament that defines him. Every performance becomes another disaster, because the world wants Krauser II to be a monster, even though the man behind the mask would rather be listening to Swedish pop than ruling a legion of metal devotees.
