Chobits follows Hideki Motosuwa, a hardworking country boy who moves through daily life while studying for college entrance exams and trying to survive on a tight budget in a world where Persocoms, personal computers that look exactly like human beings, have become the latest craze. One evening, he finds an abandoned Persocom and takes her home. After he manages to activate her, she can only speak one word, "Chii," and that name stays with her. Unlike other Persocoms, Chii cannot download information directly onto her hard drive, so Hideki decides to teach her about the world the old-fashioned way while continuing to prepare for his exams.
As Hideki and his friends spend more time with Chii, they begin to uncover the mystery behind her origins and the urban legend of the "Chobits," special units said to possess real human emotions, independent thoughts, and love for their owners. The story balances quiet comedy, awkward romance, and a deeper question about the boundary between human feeling and programmed affection. Can a relationship truly grow between a Persocom and a human, or does Chii represent something far more unusual?
