About the song
“Uchiage Hanabi (打上花火)” is the main theme of the 2017 animated film Fireworks (Uchiage Hanabi, Shita kara Miru ka? Yoko kara Miru ka?). It brings together DAOKO and Kenshi Yonezu, who also wrote, composed, and produced the song. Their alternating vocals gradually meet in the chorus, mirroring the uncertain bond between Nazuna and Norimichi and their wish to hold on to a moment that seems bound to disappear. The arrangement moves from restrained piano and electronic textures toward a broad, luminous yet melancholic chorus. Rather than serving as a detached end-credit song, “Uchiage Hanabi” extends the film’s central ideas: summer memories, choices that might have changed everything, and the fleeting nature of youth. Its conversational structure is essential to the emotional effect, giving both characters a musical point of view.
