yama is a Japanese singer affiliated with Sony Music Records. In junior high school, yama made home-recorded Vocaloid cover songs, then spent a period exploring illustration and video as forms of expression. In March 2018, yama began posting to YouTube under the name yama and emerged in the late 2010s. In 2019, yama became the vocalist of the trio BIN and appeared as the guest singer on くじら's "ねむるまち". As a solo artist, yama released the first original song "春を告げる" on April 17, 2020. It later reached No. 1 on Spotify's Viral Top 50 (Japan), peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, and surpassed 100 million streams. The digital single "真っ白" followed on October 21, 2020 as yama's major-label debut on MASTERSIX FOUNDATION. Working in contemporary j-pop with elements of psychedelic rock and electronic-leaning textures, yama has a restrained but expressive vocal style that often gives the songs an intimate, atmospheric tone. The first full album, "the meaning of life", was released on September 1, 2021. The second album, "Versus the night", followed on August 31, 2022, and "それでも僕は" on the latter marked yama's first lyric and composition credit. yama keeps personal details such as age, birthplace, and face private, and has appeared in media and concerts wearing a mask since the December 2020 THE FIRST TAKE performance of "春を告げる". Anime work has been a continuing part of yama's career. "Mahi (麻痺)" was used as the opening of "2.43: Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Club". Later anime songs included "Shikisai (色彩)" for "Spy x Family", "Adult Chick Children (アダルトチックチルドレン)" for "Sanda", and "Tobou yo (飛ぼうよ)" for "Yomi no Tsugai". In 2025 yama released the music video for the opening song of Your Forma and later that year the music video for SANDA's opening song; in 2026, Daemons of the Shadow Realm revealed theme songs by Vaundy and yama.
