Biography
Scott Matthew is a singer-songwriter born in Queensland, Australia, known for his intimate vocal style and for work that connects singer-songwriter songwriting with alternative pop and alternative rock textures. He later established himself as an independent artist based in New York City, where he continues to write and perform.
From 2001 to 2006, Matthew was a member of the alternative pop band Elva Snow, which he co-founded with Spencer Cobrin, formerly of Morrissey. That period also marked the beginning of his association with anime soundtracks, where his voice became closely linked to the compositions of Yoko Kanno.
In 2001, Matthew provided vocals for the anime film Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door, and from 2002 to 2003 he contributed to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Both projects were produced by Yoko Kanno. His performance of the alternative rock song "Lithium Flower" was used as the ending song for the first season of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
Matthew launched his solo career with his self-titled debut album on 7 March 2008. He followed it with There Is an Ocean That Divides on 24 April 2009 and Gallantry's Favorite Son on 10 June 2011. Across these releases and collaborations, Scott Matthew built a distinctive profile as a singer-songwriter with a lasting presence in anime music and a long-running independent career in New York City.
