Biography
Nightmare is a Japanese visual kei, j-rock, and jazz band formed in January 2000 by Sakito and Hitsugi while most of the members were still in high school. Soon after the group began taking shape, Yomi was invited by Sakito, Ni-ya by Hitsugi, and Zannin joined after they heard their classmates were forming a band. The current lineup includes YOMI, Ni-ya, RUKA, Sakito, and Hitsugi, and the band has been associated with HPQ. Early influences from X Japan and Luna Sea helped shape Nightmare's dramatic, melodic identity from the beginning.
Nightmare's sound is built around heavy metal, a strong bass line, tricky rhythms, and frequent changes in melodic keys. Even when the band leans into more experimental material, that combination of heaviness and melody remains central. Their songs often balance intensity with clear hooks, which has helped them stand out within Japanese rock and metal-oriented anime music. Although their more recent songs have a slight avant-garde and alternative element, most notably on the album "anima", the band has kept its roots from the indie period.
That balance between early intensity and later refinement is a major part of Nightmare's appeal, especially for listeners who follow both rock and anime music. The band has also experimented with jazz, ambience, electronica, techno, and bossa nova, showing a wider range than many groups in the same scene. Even though many of their songs are fast-tempoed, they have also written a fair number of rock ballads. Nightmare is also closely associated with Death Note, which made the band a familiar name for anime fans searching for Japanese rock and anime theme music.
