Biography
Matenrou Opera is a Japanese visual kei band formed in late 2006 and active from early 2007. Fronted by Sono, the group built its identity around a dramatic sound that blends heavy metal power, melodic hooks, and theatrical presentation. From the beginning, Matenrou Opera stood out for pairing technical musicianship with a polished, cinematic style that fits naturally within Japan's visual kei scene.
The band's early lineup featured Sono, Yuu, Karen, Yo, and Mika. Over time, the group went through several lineup changes: Karen and Mika were replaced by Anzi and Ayame, while later Anzi left the band and Yuu retired due to health problems. These changes reshaped the group, but Matenrou Opera continued to evolve without losing the strong contrast between hard-edged guitars, atmospheric keyboards, and expressive vocals that define its sound.
In 2019, JaY joined as guitarist and Hibiki entered the band as drummer, giving the lineup a new foundation. Through these shifts, Matenrou Opera has remained a recognizable name in Japanese rock and visual kei, valued for its theatrical energy, melodic focus, and a style that bridges metal intensity with an elegant, dramatic image.
