Chatmonchy is a Japanese all-female rock band from Tokushima Prefecture, on the island of Shikoku. Formed in 2000, the group has been signed to Sony Music Japan’s Ki/oon Records since 2005, and its music is associated with indie rock, J-rock, and power pop. Chatmonchy became known for a sharp, melodic style built around guitar riffs, bass lines, and expressive vocal harmonies.
The band’s lineup includes Kumiko Takahashi, Eriko Hashimoto, and Akiko Fukuoka, and its history includes several line-up changes in its early years. In that period, Eriko Hashimoto handled guitar and vocals, while Akiko Fukuoka played bass and chorus; other musicians joined and left before the group’s later configuration took shape. Developed in the Japanese rock scene of the 2000s, Chatmonchy built a reputation for a direct, emotionally clear sound rather than a highly polished or overly ornate one. Its compact, band-driven approach helped the group stand out among contemporary J-rock acts and remain strongly associated with that era of Japanese rock.
