Tsuki to Laika to Nosferatu is set in 1957, when the Federal Republic of Zirnitra shocks the world by launching the first living creature, a dog, into space. The breakthrough intensifies its Cold War-style rivalry with the United Kingdom of Arnack, and both powers race toward the long-held dream of sending humans beyond the atmosphere.
With animal testing offering only limited insight into the dangers of spaceflight, Zirnitra's government turns to an unusual solution: vampires, whose bodies are close enough to human anatomy to serve as ideal test subjects. Irina Luminesk, a young vampire taken from her mountain home, accepts her fate with little resistance and begins training for the project. To oversee her, the state assigns Lev Leps, a former top candidate to become the first human cosmonaut, as her guide and trainer.
As Lev and Irina work side by side, their relationship gradually moves beyond handler and subject. The two are drawn into the risks, ambition, and wonder of the space race, while their shared fascination with the cosmos slowly becomes a quiet bond that carries them through the discipline and uncertainty of their training.
