In The Law of Ueki, most humans have no idea that Earth has become the stage for a bizarre tournament to decide the next ruler of the Heavenly World. One hundred Heavenly Beings known as God Candidates each choose a middle school student and transfer a power to them, turning their representatives into combatants in a battle for promotion. The winning student receives the Blank Talent, an ability of their choice, while the God Candidate behind that fighter ascends as God and becomes king of the Heavenly World.
Kousuke Ueki, a student at Hinokuni Junior High School, enters the competition after his homeroom teacher Kobayashi grants him the power to turn trash into trees. Worried by the selfish way other contestants use their abilities, his classmate Ai Mori watches as Ueki throws himself into battle in pursuit of his own sense of justice. His path crosses with other talented power users, including Seiichirou Sano, Rinko Jerrard, Robert Haydn, and Hideyoshi Soya, and with allies such as Tenko, who deepen the conflict around him. As the tournament expands, Ueki's strange ability becomes part of a larger struggle over strength, character, and who deserves to shape the future of the Heavenly World.
