Synopsis
Maquia follows an Iorph girl who has always lived with a quiet sense of isolation, even among her own people. The Iorph are a special race of mystical beings who can live for hundreds of years while remaining apart from the daily troubles of mankind, and Maquia has carried that loneliness since being orphaned at a young age. She dreams of the outside world, but the chief’s warnings keep her from leaving home.
When the power-hungry kingdom of Mezarte invades the Iorph homeland, that distant world finally crashes into her life. Mezarte already commands what remains of the giant dragons called the Renato, and its king wants to use the immortality of the Iorph to strengthen his bloodline. The assault devastates the land, killing most of the inhabitants, and Maquia is swept away by one Renato that goes berserk. It soon dies and leaves her alone in a forest far from home, with only the cry of a single baby in the distance.
Maquia finds the child in a destroyed village and decides to raise him as her own, naming him Ariel. With no knowledge of the human world, no idea how to care for a child who will age far faster than she does, and no way to escape the loneliness that still follows her, she chooses to build a fragile family out of loss and uncertainty.
