In House of Five Leaves, Masanosuke "Masa" Akitsu drifts through Japan's peaceful Edo period as a wandering ronin. Though he is a skilled swordsman, his meek personality has earned him the label "unreliable," and employers repeatedly dismiss him, leaving him increasingly unsure of his place as a samurai and the resolve that role demands.
At his lowest point, Masa is approached by Yaichi, a carefree man dressed in pink who hires him on a whim to serve as his bodyguard. The job is not as innocent as it first seems, and Masa is drawn into the illicit activities of the group led by Yaichi. As he becomes further entangled with the gang known as the Five Leaves, his curiosity pulls him toward the past and motivations of the mysterious outlaws, even as he struggles with his own principles.
