Overlord begins as Yggdrasil, a once-popular virtual reality MMORPG, reaches its final shutdown. Momonga stays logged in through the last moments, determined to witness the end, but instead of logging off he remains conscious when the servers should go dark. He awakens inside the body of his skeletal warrior avatar, Ainz Ooal Gown, and soon realizes that the NPCs in his guild home have begun to move and speak with wills of their own.
Cut off from the real world and stranded in a reality that no longer follows the game’s rules, Ainz must guide the loyal guardians of Nazarick through a crisis he cannot fully explain. As he searches for answers, the mystery widens: who else may have been drawn into this new world, why the familiar logic of Yggdrasil has collapsed, and how much of his own identity can survive when his life is no longer just a game. With every alliance, threat, and rumor that follows the name Ainz Ooal Gown, Overlord turns a desperate bid for survival into a struggle over authority, control, and the shape of an unknown world.
