Otome Youkai Zakuro is set in an alternate Japan where Westernization is reshaping daily life, customs, and the boundary between the human world and the spirit world. Second Lieutenant Kei Agemaki, the son of a famous general, has spent his life hiding an overwhelming fear of paranormal beings, but that fear is put to the test when he and two other officers are reassigned to the Ministry of Spirit Affairs. There, they are forced to live and work alongside youkai, turning every assignment into a test of nerves, trust, and cooperation.
With the help of the fox spirit Kushimatsu, Kei must work with the youkai maidens Zakuro, Susukihotaru, Hoozuki, and Bonbori as they investigate supernatural incidents and confront the uneasy distance between humans and spirits. As old customs clash with new ideas, the story follows fragile alliances and reluctant partnerships, while also highlighting the tension that arises when east meets west, local meets foreign, and women meet men. Across its supernatural cases, Otome Youkai Zakuro focuses on the slow, difficult process of learning how to trust one another.
